Meme video sizes and safe zones

Three aspect ratios cover almost everything, and the difference between them is not aesthetic — it decides how much of your frame the platform is willing to show. Getting this right takes thirty seconds at export and saves the caption that would otherwise be cropped in half.

The three ratios that matter

9:16 vertical at 1080×1920 is the default for short-form video feeds and stories: it fills a phone screen entirely and leaves no letterboxing. 1:1 square at 1080×1080 is the safe middle ground for feeds that crop unpredictably, since it looks deliberate in both a vertical and a horizontal context. 16:9 landscape at 1920×1080 belongs on platforms watched on wider screens. A fourth, 4:5 at 1080×1350, is worth knowing because it is the tallest portrait shape most feeds allow without cropping, so it takes maximum vertical space without risk.

Safe zones: the part that actually gets seen

Every platform overlays its own interface on your video — usernames, captions, buttons, progress bars. Roughly the bottom fifth and the top tenth of a vertical video can be covered depending on the app, and the right edge often carries a column of icons. Keep text and anything essential inside the middle 80% of the frame. The simplest habit is to design as if a strip along every edge will be lost, because on at least one platform it will be.

Why one file everywhere goes wrong

Uploading a 16:9 file to a vertical feed leaves black bars or triggers an automatic crop, and automatic crops centre on the frame rather than on your subject. Uploading vertical to a landscape player does the same in reverse. Exporting the same edit two or three times costs a minute and means you decide the framing rather than an algorithm.

Frame rate, bitrate and file size

Match the source frame rate rather than converting — 30fps for most phone footage, 60fps if the clip has fast motion worth preserving. Export at a generous bitrate, because the platform will re-encode and every generation loses quality; starting high means the version people see is still clean. Keep an eye on file size limits, which are usually generous enough that quality, not size, is the binding constraint.
